ABOUT FCBA

Dear FCBA Players and Families,

You are about to embark on an exciting next step in your development as a student athlete. We are pleased that you have chosen to continue your journey with FCBA! FCBA was formed to offer a new type of AAU basketball experience.

Our hope is to humanize the often hard-edged and mysterious world of AAU through positive support, openness and transparency across our organization and teams. We are committed to player development as well as to winning, and believe fully that one does not have to be sacrificed to achieve the other.  To this end, FCBA has partnered with nationally recognized trainers to work with our players on a weekly basis – one of the many unique benefits of FCBA’s AAU program. Best wishes for a fulfilling and successful upcoming season!

CODE OF
CONDUCT

I hereby pledge to be positive about my youth sports experience and accept responsibility for my participation by following this Players’ Code of Ethics Pledge.

I will…

  • Have fun!
  • Be a good sport (win or lose); be honest, fair and always show good sportsmanship to all coaches, players, officials, parents, and fans at every game and practice.
  • Model value of commitment to the team. I will attend every practice and game that I can and will notify my coach if I cannot.
  • Put personal goals aside for the betterment of the team.
  • I will show courtesy and respect to teammates, opponents, and coaches.
  • I will treat athletic contests, including practice sessions, educational experiences, and opportunities.
  • I will not engage in unsportsmanlike conduct.
  • I will not engage in rude behavior.
  • I will treat everyone, including coaches, parents, players, and officials, with respect, regardless of race, creed, color, nationality or gender.

PARENT
PLADGE

  • FCBA will be dedicated first and foremost to player development through practice, training and high-level competition.
  • FCBA will provide a positive environment where players learn and develop from their mistakes, while also having fun being kids along the way.
  • FCBA will train players to play and be comfortable in multiple positions on the court, encouraging every player to shoot, pass, dribble, rebound and play defense in both practices and games — no players will be limited to non-shooting support roles.
  • FCBA coaches will determine playing time based on a combination of performance, effort, and practice. Neither organizational politics nor external factors will govern basketball decisions.
  • FCBA will not recruit over existing players during the season.
  • FCBA will participate in high-level tournaments with top competition.  We will not schedule games and/or tournaments just to fill the calendar.
  • FCBA supports a healthy balance between basketball and life away from basketball to achieve optimal results in both.
  • FCBA will create a culture of respect and hold all players, coaches and parents to a high standard of conduct through a “we over me” mindset.
  • FCBA coaches and leadership will maintain an open door policy for all players and their families.

At Full Court Basketball Coaching Academy, the foundation of our organization is development.  We provide all our athletes an opportunity to grow, progress, and play at their highest skill level in the positive, supportive culture we create.  A good basketball coach has command of sports tactics; a great coach also has vision and motivation, and inculcates them in the team. Positive energy in practice, training and competition is reflected in our games.

What does that mean for players and families?

  • We strive to establish a constructive environment in practice, training and competition. Encouragement, support, togetherness, and family are all aspects of our teams.
  • It is the job of coaches to model the behavior they want to see in their players. We expect to see positive energy, intensity, and commitment in our athletes; that all starts with the coach.
  • A truly successful coach helps every player achieve his or her potential. We believe in building our own players and developing team chemistry, rather than recruiting in “better” players.
  • Our players are kids – talented, hard-working kids – and they will make mistakes. Instead of breaking down players because of a mistake, yelling or taking them out of the game, we believe in turning that disappointment into positive energy. That allows athletes to play at a higher level.
  • FCBA practices and training sessions are high-energy and intense, with coaches and trainers who strive to push our athletes beyond their comfort zones to achieve even higher levels of play. We work hard, but we have fun, too. When practice sessions become monotonous, players lose interest and focus.
  • To be a great team, you need a great system, and the discipline to stick to it.  Teams with no system struggle to play together. Teams follow their system succeed even against the strongest competition.
  • There are three key sets of relationships that make a team work: players’ relationship with their coach, players’ relationships with each other, and families’ support for the team. When all three click well, it’s almost unbeatable.

We at Full Court Basketball Academy believe in training players and developing their skill sets to be better players and people.  Ask our players about FCBA, and they will tell you:  they work hard, they have fun, they learn a lot about basketball, and about themselves – and along the way, they win a lot of games.  If that is the sports experience you want for your child, we invite you to join us.

FCBA has partnered with Virginia Elite to develop girls u13-u17 showcase teams to play on the Under Armour Rise and Future Circuits.

How do the Coaches communicate?

This crucial aspect is covered on the team level by meeting with the coaches and team managers. Coaches may also post information on their individual team pages. These pages also have coach, assistant coach, and manager contact information. Head Coach and staff contacts can be located on our Contacts page.

Is financial aid available?

FCBA has established a need basis scholarship program. If your son or daughter makes a team and your family is in need of financial assistance, please inform the coach immediately.

How is AAU different from other programs or leagues?

The AAU program is much more competitive than recreational or local select leagues because it involves athletes from different communities playing on the same team, resulting in a better talent pool. Recreational leagues, on the other hand, consist of teams from one town or school, which means a smaller pool and less competition for team selection.

What is the time commitment to the AAU program?

The AAU program is a bigger time commitment than a recreational league, with practices during the week and games and tournaments on the weekends. It is also important to keep in mind that players who are unable to attend practice will also miss out on understanding what was covered in practice (for example, learning a play). Therefore, missed practices may have a significant impact on playing time.

My child plays another sport – would he/she be able to play AAU Basketball also?

Yes, your child can still play AAU Basketball. FCBA AAU teams have practices during the week.  Games and tournaments are typically on weekends (some tournaments start on Friday evenings)

How many teams are there?

Going forward, FCBA will typically have 2 teams (National & Regional) per grade that are selected by ability level during the tryouts.

Is playing time guaranteed if my child makes a team?

Unlike some programs, AAU DOES NOT GUARANTEE playing time for any player. Coaches must weigh a number of factors to determine which players will start and who will be subbed in at every game. Coaches generally do not keep track of individuals player’s playing time. If at any time you are concerned about your child’s playing time, please discuss this with the coach away from the event, never immediately after the game. Please keep in mind the broader goals of the program before taking issue with any player’s playing time.

My Son/daughter is very upset over not making a team; what should I say to her?

We understand that not getting selected to a team is a heartbreaking experience for any child. It is important that you explain to your child that giving his/her best effort is most important. You can share that many good players have not been selected to a team at one time or another. Michael Jordan, for example, didn’t make his high school team once. Players should evaluate the areas in which they need improvement and work to improve skills.

What if my child cannot attend all tryout sessions?

Notification to the team coach or Coach Marvin Somoza needs to be made immediately if a player cannot attend a tryout session and would still like to be considered for a team. Our staff will work with the parent in order to determine if the player should attend another tryout session. Payment is not refunded if a player cannot make a scheduled tryout session.

Which team is my son/daughter trying out for?

FCBA Soldiers teams are based on grade level. For information about AAU and to view the complete eligibility rules and age chart, go to AAUGirlsBasketball.org

Who selects the players that make a team?

The FCBA Soldiers’ coaching staff selects players based on a scoring system and observation.

How do you evaluate players to ensure each player gets a fair tryout?

Players are put through basic basketball drills to evaluate his/her work ethic, hustle, attitude, shooting, passing, dribbling, rebounding, and defensive skills. Hard work, hustle, and good attitude are contributing factors in team selection. Even if a player has a difficult session and his/her shooting or game is “off” that session, other factors are still considered. All players are put through the same drills to ensure that the tryout process is fair.

What happens when tryouts conflict with other games?

The FCBA expects all players are expected to take advantage of ALL OF THE TRYOUTS for his or her grade. It’s impossible to schedule tryouts without scheduling conflicts for travel or school games.

What experience should a player have before trying out for the FCBA Soldiers?

Players can have wide variety of basketball experience. It is important to remember because we are drawing from multiple communities, AAU teams are more competitive than most recreational, middle school, Travel or CYO teams. We recommend your child have at least one year of experience in a competitive league or on a travel team.

My child has made the team, now what?

Parent confirmation is required within 24 hours of notification of team selection. This occurs by replying affirmatively to the e-mail from the coach. In addition, both players and parents must attend the FCBA Pre-Season Meeting, which explains the overall program objectives and expectations. A partial payment is due at this meeting. Parents are notified of the date and time of the meeting shortly after the teams are finalized.

How many tryouts are there?

Each grade level will have 2-3 (2) hour tryout sessions. Players are expected to attend all tryout sessions. See our Tryout page for updated times and dates.
